New York State Assembly Minority Leader Brian M. Kolb (R,C-Canandaigua) spoke recently with SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher and SUNY Board Chairman H. Carl McCall about the latest issues and challenges regarding higher education in New York State. During the 2016 Legislative Session, Leader Kolb and the Assembly Minority Conference will introduce measures aimed at making college a more affordable and rewarding experience for students. Some of the initiatives will include:

  • Developing a "Learning for Work" program designed to accelerate career readiness and reduce student loan debt by better preparing high school students for the workforce;
  • Providing student loan payment tax deductions to help young people better manage the skyrocketing costs of college tuition;
  • Petitioning the federal government for greater options to allow more refinancing and consolidation opportunities for student loan debt; and
  • Enhancing the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) by increasing the maximum TAP benefit, raising the household income threshold for TAP and expanding TAP eligibility to graduate students.
