The Finger Lakes Region is a uniquely beautiful and vibrant part of New York State, and there is no better time to experience it than summer. Its world-class wineries, breathtaking views and friendly residents are just a few of its many charms. This summer, take some time to soak up all the region has to offer, and at the same time, help support our local economy and strengthen our communities.
One of the best attributes of the region is its hard-working, dedicated and creative small-business owners. This year, they are offering some great products and activities that showcase the many assets we have at our fingertips. Here are a few suggestions:
FINGER LAKES WINE FESTIVAL DELIVERS IMPECCABLE PRODUCTS
By now, just about everyone knows the vibrant area surrounding the Finger Lakes produce near-perfect grapes for fermentation. The region's award-winning wineries have helped spark educational and recreational interest in the area. This weekend, the Finger Lakes Wine Festival will highlight some of the premiere products available.
Be sure to catch the Tasters Banquet on Saturday, July 16, sponsored by Women for WineSense- Finger Lakes Chapter, with food prepared by the New York Wine and Culinary Center. The dinner includes wine, a featured guest from Women for WineSense at each table, a four-course meal and a regional wine expert available to chat, among other features. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. As always, please drink responsibly.
FARMERS MARKETS OFFER DELICIOUS PRODUCE, FAMILY FUN
There are few other events that embody the spirit of community more than a local farmers market. Friends and neighbors offer food from their backyards to your table creating an old-fashioned market experience that is truly remarkable. Every Wednesday, from now until October, the Seneca Farmers Market will offer food and products from area farmers, artisans, bakers and crafters. The Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the People's Park, 15 Water St., Seneca Falls.
The Canandaigua Farmers Market, located on the east side of South Main Street in the lot between Lafayette Avenue and Mill Street, is open Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. thru October. Bring the whole family for a wonderful bonding experience that emphasizes the importance and benefits of shopping local.
SUMMER MUSTS: MUSIC AND ART ROUND OUT THE SEASON
No summer evening is complete without indulging in the creative works of others. This weekend, the Downtown Canandaigua Art & Music Festival will feature events on Friday, July 15, from noon to 7 p.m., Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Now in its 28th year, the festival includes music, food, artists, crafters, exhibits and activities for children in historic downtown Canandaigua.
Each of these events contributes to the fabric of the Finger Lakes Region and gives residents of all ages an opportunity to engage in important community building. Further, patronizing local establishments is a cost-effective, environmentally friendly way to boost the local economy and support neighbors.
