We offer our congratulations to MaryEllen Elia on her appointment as the New York State Commissioner of Education by the Board of Regents. As we continue to work to support our schools and give our children the best possible education, her leadership will be vital. The State Education Department (SED) is critical to making sure our schools and standards work for both students and educators, and we have high hopes that she will bring renewed energy and vision in her new role. Commissioner Elia has years of experience as an educator, administrator and leader, and will bring a vast amount of knowledge and expertise to SED. As both the first woman and first Buffalo Niagara native to serve as commissioner, she is already making history. We look forward to working with Commissioner Elia and the Regents as we strive to improve our education system, listen to and assist educators and, above all, always put the children of New York first when it comes to education.
