Statement from Speaker Carl Heastie and Assembly Education Chair Catherine Nolan on Regents Chancellor Merryl Tisch's Decision Not to Seek Another Term

New Yorkers owe a debt of gratitude to New York State Board of Regents Chancellor Dr. Merryl Tisch for her years of service on behalf of our school children and efforts to improve our education system. Dr. Tisch has been a principled leader who stood up for New York's struggling schools and a tireless advocate for higher standards that better prepare our children for future achievement.

A former teacher, Dr. Tisch has been a leading advocate for innovative methods to attract and retain high quality teachers in our schools. She shared the Assembly Majority's vision that prioritized equitable funding for the state's neediest districts.

Dr. Tisch's decades long commitment to the pursuit of excellence in education has served New York well. On behalf of our colleagues in the State Assembly, we commend her for her service to our schools, our children and our state. We will continue to work with all of our partners in education to achieve the best education possible for New York's students.
