Speaker Heastie's Annual Statewide Tour Continues in Jefferson County

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie yesterday joined Assemblymember Addie Jenne on another stop on this year's statewide tour to visit the 116th Assembly District. Together, they visited the Chaumont Village Beach, Sackets Harbor Battlefield and the Jefferson County Fair.

"It is great being back learning about the history and enjoying the natural beauty of Jefferson County," Speaker Heastie said. "But we need to make sure the families and businesses here are getting the funds that the Assembly fought for to help them recover from last year's flooding."

"I am so glad to have the Speaker back in the district, and be able to show him more of Jefferson County's unique history and destinations," Assemblymember Jenne said. "I know he is on our side helping our businesses and families recover from the floods."

The first stop on the visit was to the Chaumont Village Beach in Lyme. Speaker Heastie and Assemblymember Jenne were accompanied by the Town of Lyme Supervisor Scott Aubertine. Last year, after significant flooding, the Assembly passed legislation establishing a $55 million flood recovery grant program to assist small businesses, farms, property owners and municipalities.

Speaker Heastie and Assemblymember Jenne also toured the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site with Sackets Harbor Mayor Molly Reilly and Sackets Harbor Schools Superintendent. During the War of 1812, Sackets Harbor was home to a shipyard, and was a center of military and naval activity. British forces attempted to destroy the shipyard in May 1813, but were driven off. It continued to construct and supply ships through the end of the war. Today the historic site has public exhibits, guided and self-guided tours, and in the summer guides reenact the camp life of a soldier in 1813.

The last stop on this leg of the tour was to the Jefferson County Fair. In its 201st year, the fair showcases agriculture, and dairy in particular. While the dairy industry in New York State is hurting, farmers still bring their animals to the county fair and demonstrate some of what they do for friends and neighbors.
