State Homeland Security Program

Office of Homeland Security

The purpose of this request is to solicit applications for federal State Homeland Security Program (SHSP). Funding has been made available to the New York State Office of Homeland Security (OHS) to be awarded to local governments for the purpose of expanding regional preparedness capabilities of first responders to respond to major terrorist events and/or natural disasters. The intention of these grants is to measure regional preparedness, promote and improve regional response through exercises and to address gaps identified in the After Action Reports (AARs) and Improvement Plans (IPs). Applications must support an exercise plan that is multi-disciplined, multi-jurisdictional, includes multiple county participants, and has measurable goals and objectives.

ELIGIBILITY:  Eligible applicants include state, local and tribal government entities.

Community Reinvestment Program

Office of Children and Family Services

The New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) invites the bidding public to search the OCFS On-Line Bidder’s List (OBL), at the address indicated below for upcoming bidding opportunities. It is anticipated applications for this grant program will continue for several months. Bidding opportunities for this grant program may include, but are not limited to, the following program areas of community reinvestment and kinship/caretaker review. Bids will also be accepted for settlement houses and a special delinquency prevention program. The OCFS OBL is maintained electronically and can be found at: https://ocfsws.ocfs.state.ny.us/obl/. If you wish to receive announcements of these and future OCFS procurement opportunities and to be able to download solicitation documents, you must register on the OBL. If you choose to register, you will be prompted to provide certain demographic information about yourself and the organization or government agency you represent along with identifying the service categories in which you are interested.

Regional Resource Development Center

Department of Health

This competitive grant program consists of nine grants which have been made available for organizations to operate Regional Resource Development Centers (RRDC) to provide both Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Nursing Home Transition and Diversion (NHTD) waiver resource development and assistance to individuals seeking community-based health care. Grants will cover expenses related to contracted activities as identified in the request for application (RFA). ELIGIBILITY:  Eligible applicants include not-for-profit organizations.

Renewable Energy Feasibility Grants

Rural Business-Cooperative Service

The Rural Energy for America program will provide funds to agricultural producers and rural small businesses to conduct feasibility studies for renewable energy systems. The Rural Energy for America Program is designed to help agricultural producers and rural small businesses reduce energy costs and consumption and help meet the nation’s critical energy needs. The grants are awarded on a competitive basis and can be up to 25 percent of total eligible project costs. Applicants seeking a grant will have to submit applications that include specific information about the applicant and the proposed feasibility study (e.g., the renewable energy project for which the study will be conducted; matching funds), and the experience of the entity that will be conducting the feasibility study.

ELIGIBILITY:  Agricultural producers and rural small businesses, all agricultural producers, including farmers and ranchers, who gain 50 percent or more of their gross income from the agricultural operations and small businesses that are located in a rural area.

FUNDING:  Individual grants are limited to $50,000.

DEADLINE:  July 31, 2009.

Children Welfare Grant Program

Children Welfare Grant Program

The Heckscher Foundation for Children was founded in 1921 to promote the welfare of children. The Heckscher Foundation funds organizations serving youth in the fields of education, family services, job training, health, arts and recreation. The Foundation’s giving takes the form of program support, capacity-building, capital projects and general operating support. The Heckscher Foundation for Children seeks to “level the playing field” for underserved youth. In all of their giving activities, they stress the achievement of positive, measurable, clear outcomes and are particularly interested in programs that are prepared to critically evaluate their work. All applications must be submitted on-line.

ELIGIBILITY:  Contact the Heckscher Foundation for more information on eligible applicants.

FUNDING:  There are no minimum or maximum grant amounts considered by the Heckscher Foundation.

DEADLINE:  Though there is an ongoing review of applications, The Heckscher Foundation seeks to respond to applications within 30 days of receipt.

Grantsmanship Center

The Grantsmanship Training Program is coming to New York: Buffalo, September 21-25, 2009, hosted by the Salvation Army.

The classes will be conducted by The Grantsmanship Center and are kept at a maximum of 30 participants. The cost is $895, which includes one-year enrollment in the TGCI Membership Program. A limited number of half-tuition scholarships are available to agencies with annual budgets of less than $300,000.

The Foundation Center has scheduled the following free training opportunities during July 2009:

Grantseeking Basics:
July 8 and 28
Attendees will learn how the Center’s resources can help make them more effective grantseekers. For beginners, this introduction to the library provides instruction in foundation research and identification of potential funders. A tour of the library will follow.

Proposal Writing Basics:
July 15
Attendees will learn about the basics of writing a proposal for their nonprofit organizations.

Introduction to the Foundation Directory Online:
July 8 and 28
This session provides a hands-on introduction to the Center’s comprehensive Web subscription database.

How to Approach a Foundation:
July 28
Attendees will learn how to initiate contact with potential funders; plan calls and meetings; and build partnerships with donors. This class is intended for fundraisers with some experience, though not necessarily with foundations.

Classes are held at The Foundation Center, New York Library, 79 Fifth Avenue, 2nd Floor in New York City. Space is limited and you can register online at www.fdncenter.org, in person, or by calling (212) 620-4230. You may also visit the Web site for information on other training opportunities available through the Center.
