Speaker Heastie Announces Four New Members Sworn In to Assembly

Speaker Carl Heastie today announced that four new members were sworn in to the New York State Assembly, including Assemblymembers Khaleel M. Anderson, Kenneth Burgos, Sarah Clark and Demond L. Meeks.

“Congratulations and welcome to our newest members of the Assembly Majority,” Speaker Heastie said. “I look forward to getting to work with each of you in the closing weeks of 2020, and on into next session as we help families through the COVID-19 crisis and continue our work to move New York forward.”

The four members that were sworn in today fill seats that became vacant over the past year due to the previous member leaving the Assembly to seek other opportunities, or, in the case of the 137^th Assembly District, because the sitting member passed away.

“I am humbled and honored to have been elected by the people of the 31st Assembly District. I have the distinct honor of being the youngest Black lawmaker in New York State history,” Assemblymember Anderson said. “In partnership with my colleagues, I will work to introduce and support legislation to elevate the lives of my constituents in Queens while serving in Albany.”

“The Bronx is home – where I was born and raised - and it is truly an honor to be representing my neighborhood and my neighbors in the New York State Assembly,” Assemblymember Burgos said. “I look forward to working with my new colleagues to ensure the needs of our communities and families are heard and advanced every day, and to be a bold voice for those who need it most.”

“Over the years, I have seen how politics – from city hall to the U.S. Senate - can improve the lives of families here in Rochester,” Assemblymember Clark said. “It is an honor that our community in the 136^th Assembly District has elected me to represent them, and I am ready to get to work.”

“I am both honored and humbled that the people of the 137th Assembly District chose me to represent them in the Assembly,” Assemblymember Meeks said. “I look forward to bringing the skills I learned as an organizer to improve the quality of life for my constituents in Rochester and for families across New York.”
