Budget Highlights |
The Department of Law provides legal counsel to the State and represents the State in many court proceedings. It protects State agencies and citizens through the investigation of organized and white-collar crime as well as Medicaid fraud. The Office of the Attorney General protects consumers from fraudulent business practices and defends the public’s interest in the courts by protecting charitable donors and beneficiaries and enforcing laws prohibiting discrimination. The Department also brings civil and/or criminal actions against violators of Environmental law. |
This agency is included in the Public Protection and General Government appropriation bill. |
State Operations |
The Executive recommends an All Funds State Operations appropriation of $197,291,000, an increase of $8,864,000 or 4.7 percent above State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2003-04. |
These increases reflect actual costs of continuing current programs including personal service, fringe benefit, indirect and fixed cost increases. Federal funds to support the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit represent $591,000 of the total increase, while $8,273,000 generated from litigation settlement and civil recoveries would support the remainder of the increase. |
Article VII |
The Executive proposes Article VII language that would increase the maximum civil penalty for unfair and deceptive business practices and false advertising from $500 to $5,000 per violation. |
