Budget Highlights

The mission of the Department of Economic Development (DED) is to formulate and promote economic development strategies for businesses. The Department, in conjunction with the Urban Development Corporation, administers State economic development programs.

This agency is included in the Transportation, Economic Development and Environmental Conservation appropriation bill.

State Operations

The Executive recommends a State Operations General Fund appropriation for State Fiscal Year (SFY) 2004-05 of $28,690,000, a net increase of $4,895,000.

The Executive recommends an appropriation of $11,015,000 for the Tourism Marketing Program, an increase of $5,615,000 from SFY 2003-04.

The Executive proposes reducing the Marketing and Advertising Program, the Administration Program and the Economic Development Program by $720,000 in SFY 2004- 05, to be achieved through administrative cost reductions.

Aid To Localities

The Executive recommends a General Fund appropriation of $4,777,000 for the Local Tourism Matching Grant Program, a reduction of $1,000,000 from SFY 2003-04.

The Executive recommends support for the following programs at SFY 2003-04 levels:

  • Empire Zone Administration, $2,300,000;
  • New York City Watershed Program, $600,000;
  • Gateway Information Center at Binghamton, $200,000; and
  • Gateway Information Center at Beekmantown, $200,000.
