BPHA Caucus Releases Statement on Federal Judge Again Ruling DACA Unlawful
NEW YORK, NY (September 14, 2023)– In response to U.S. District Court Judge Andrew Hanen again ruling the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) unlawful, Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages, Chair of the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus, released the following statement:
“The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which has been in law for over a decade now, has once again been ruled unlawful by District Court Judge Andrew Hanen. Although the ruling does not prohibit the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from processing renewal applications, it does highlight the lack of progress in federal immigration reform.
The members of the Caucus, through collective and individual actions, have consistently advocated for Congressional action on behalf of the communities that we serve. Continued inaction has led to the livelihoods of millions of people frozen in limbo and an increased strain and state and local resources. This court decision, among many other factors, underscores the urgency for leadership on this issue.”
