United States Department of Agriculture

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is accepting applications through its Food and Nutrition Service to support projects that focus on improving and expanding the infrastructure needs of emergency feeding organizations (EFO) that participate in The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). The grants should help EFOs develop computerized systems for tracking time-sensitive food products; improve the distribution of perishable foods; rescue prepared, unused food; identify donors, new EFOs and eligible recipients; and improve facilities and equipment.

National Institute of Justice

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is seeking applications for research on sentencing and community corrections policies and practices that promote effective and cost-efficient community-based alternatives to jail and prison without jeopardizing public safety. Two or more grant awards will be given. Priority research questions include: What sentencing and community corrections policies and practices promote effective and cost-efficient alternatives to incarceration for alcohol and other drug-involved offenders, including those with mental health (i.e., comorbid) issues? And what technological applications and protocols for assessment or monitoring support effective and cost-efficient alternatives to incarceration?

National Institutes of Health

The National Institutes of Health is accepting applications through the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) to support projects that develop new efficacious interventions for communication disorders. Projects must focus on identifying and developing new methodologies and insights into the basic biology of the communication sciences that will have the future potential for clinical and translational application, but which are still at the preliminary exploratory stage. Projects must have a realistic expectation to yield enhanced diagnostic, intervention and treatment tools, or paradigms with widespread, cost-effective application in the NIDCD mission areas of hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech and language.

The Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation

The Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation is committed to improving communities and impacting lives through unique philanthropic programs that help children and families, animals and the environment. The foundation will make grants to qualified organizations that support children’s health and wellness, animals, the environment, and literacy and education.

The Arcus Foundation

The Arcus Foundation seeks to advance social justice inclusive of sexual orientation, gender identity and race. The foundation supports organizations, programs and projects through its National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Rights; International LGBT Rights; Religion and Values; and Racial Justice, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity programs.

The Foundation Center

The Foundation Center has scheduled the following free training classes during June 2010:

Grantseeking Basics: June 4, 16, 23
Attendees will learn how the center’s resources can help make them more effective grantseekers. For beginners, this introduction to the library provides instruction in foundation research and identification of potential funders. A tour of the library will follow.

Proposal Writing Basics: June 10
Attendees will learn about the basics of writing a proposal for their non-profit organizations.

Introduction to the Foundation Directory Online: June 16, 23
This class provides a hands-on introduction to the center’s comprehensive online subscription database.

How to Approach a Foundation: June 17
Attendees will learn how to initiate contact with potential donors, plan calls and meetings, and build partnerships with sponsors. This class is intended for fundraisers who have some experience but are not experts.
