On the state level...
New York State Homes and Community Renewal
The New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) announces the availability
of a tax credit under the New York State Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program
(SLIHC), which is authorized under Article 2-A of the Public Housing Law.

Eligibility: People and firms that construct and/or
rehabilitate rental housing for low-income households.

Funding: A total of $4 million is available. Individual awards
are not to exceed $750,000 (with a maximum award amount of $20,000 per
residential housing unit)

Deadline: For applicants seeking SLIHC in conjunction with
other HCR financing made available pursuant to a Request for Proposals
(available at http://nysdhcr.gov/Funding/ UnifiedFundingMaterials/ 2011/UF2011_RFP_101110.pdf),
the Unified Funding 2011 Capital Applications for early-round projects must be completed and
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
The Department of Environmental Conservation is accepting grant applications for urban
and community forestry projects that provide environmental, economic and social benefits
to New York State urban communities. Projects include tree inventories; management plans;
tree planting; and maintenance and green infrastructure projects, such as storm-water
management projects, green roofs or rain gardens. In addition, $1,000 Quick Start Arbor
Day grants are available – with no match requirement – to help communities support the
beginnings of a tree program by having an Arbor Day celebration. In selecting sites,
appropriate consideration should be given to underserved communities, as well as targeting
areas of environmental concern. Applicants are encouraged to form regional partnerships.
Proposals that help implement watershed protection will also be considered.

public-benefit corporations; public authorities; school districts.

On the federal level...
National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation is accepting applications, through its NanoManufacturing
(NM) program, for projects that support research and education on manufacturing at the
nanoscale – and the transfer of research results in nanoscience and nanotechnology – to
industrial applications. The NM program emphasizes a systems approach to the scale-up of
nanotechnology for high-rate production, reliability, robustness, yield, cost, and promotes
integration of nanostructures to functional micro devices and meso/macroscale systems.
Special emphases are on environmental, health and societal aspects of nanotechnology and
nanomanufacturing.

National Institutes of Health
The National Institutes of Health is accepting applications for projects that test
the effectiveness of interventions for the prevention, treatment and management
of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Projects must have a high likelihood of being
widely adopted and sustained in a wide range of health care settings, including
individuals and communities at highest risk. The approaches to be tested must
be based on interventions previously demonstrated to be efficacious in randomized
clinical trials and widely accepted throughout the CKD community. The proposed
research must target CKD and/or its complications.

Eligibility: Non-profit organizations; for-profit organizations
other than small businesses; small businesses; federally recognized Native
American tribal governments; Native American tribal organizations; state,
county, city or township, and special district governments; state, public
and private institutions of higher education.

The Foundation Center
The Foundation Center has scheduled the following free training classes in
New York City during February 2011:
Grantseeking Basics: Feb. 2, 10, 22
Attendees will learn how the center’s resources can help make them more effective grantseekers.
For beginners, this introduction to the library provides instruction in foundation research and
identification of potential funders. A tour of the library will follow.
Proposal Writing Basics: Feb. 9
Attendees will learn about the basics of writing a proposal for their non-profit organizations.
Introduction to Finding Funders: Feb. 2, 25
This class provides a hands-on introduction on how to use the center’s comprehensive online
database – the Foundation Directory Online – to research and identify potential funders. The
Foundation Directory Online contains over 100,000 profiles of grantmaking institutions.
How to Approach a Foundation: Feb. 25
Attendees will learn how to initiate contact with potential donors, plan calls and meetings, and build
partnerships with sponsors. This class is intended for fundraisers who have some experience but are
not experts.
