Goodell Announces Return of Sales Tax Exemption
Assemblyman highlights savings on clothing and footwear under $110
Assemblyman Andy Goodell (R,C–Chautauqua) recently took the opportunity to remind residents about the return of the sales tax exemption on clothing and footwear purchases under $110. As of April 1, clothing and footwear will be exempt from the state sales tax of 4 percent.
“The savings on purchases under $110 means that local families are able to keep a few extra dollars in their pockets,” said Goodell. “While I am continuing to voice strong support for broader cuts to statewide taxes, the sales tax exemption is a good start for working families. And with local residents already battling rising gas prices, I’m doing all I can to help our families stretch every dollar a little farther.”
Beginning April 1, clothing and footwear costing under $110 per item will be exempt from the state sales tax of 4 percent. This is an increase from a 2011 exemption which only applied to clothing and footwear costing less than $55. In addition, local governments also may exempt their portion of taxes on clothing and footwear priced under $110. In Chautauqua County, the local sales tax rate is an additional 3.5 percent.
