Today, Assemblyman Angelo J. Morinello (R,C,I,Ref-Niagara Falls) joined his colleagues in presenting his Conference’s plan to tackle the issue of college affordability. Many waves were made when Gov. Cuomo announced his plan to make college “free,” however, the Assembly Minority Conference believes they have come up with a better solution that is more fair and impactful.

The “Affordable College for All Initiative” would not only help low-income families send their children to college, but would also expand assistance to middle-income families and lower taxes for graduates paying back student loans. The key proponents of the plan include:

• Increasing the income threshold for the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) from $80,000 to $125,00
• Increasing the amount of TAP given from $5,165 to $6,470
• Provide an extra $500 to every TAP Award recipient
• Provide an income tax deduction for both interest and principal amounts of student loans

“My Conference’s proposal not only expands the number of eligible TAP recipients, but it takes into consideration those who have already graduated and are finding it hard to keep pace with their student loans,” said Morinello. “The goal here is to expand the availability of college education. We all want children with the desire of furthering their education to have that opportunity, and this program accomplishes that and helps them once they successfully graduate.”
