Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara Calls for Increased Funding to Support People with Disabilities in Higher Education
The call for funding is supported by the Education Department’s Advisory Council on Postsecondary Education for Students with Disabilities & the New York State Board of Regents
Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, Chair of the New York State Assembly Sub-Committee on Autism Spectrum Disorders, joined Assembly & Senate colleagues this week at the State Capitol to call for increased funding in the New York State budget to provide critical support services to students attending college who have physical and intellectual disabilities.
In 2017, the State Education Department’s Advisory Council on Postsecondary Education for Students with Disabilities recommended funding to provide disabled college students with much-needed enhanced support services and resources. In the last two state budgets, only $2 million has been included to improve these support services.
Previously, the New York State Board of Regents determined that it would take $15 million to fully fund the program, and Assemblyman Santabarbara is calling for that gap to be closed with an additional $13 million in funding to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
"Getting through college can be a stressful experience for anybody, let alone those with a disability", said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “That’s why I’m calling for increased funding in this year's state budget that ensures that people with disabilities are never left behind. We must do more to create an inclusive, accepting society that values all of its members and takes steps to ensure everyone can participate and thrive. Whether it’s education or finding meaningful employment, I’ll keep fighting to ensure those with disabilities have every opportunity to live healthy, independent lives and work towards their goals,” Santabarbara added.
