Assemblyman Santabarbara to Unveil Restored President Jimmy Carter Monument in the Town of Rotterdam
Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara announced that he will be hosting a ceremony to unveil the newly restored monument in Rotterdam honoring former President Jimmy Carter, who recently entered hospice care. President Carter lived in Rotterdam for a brief time before his presidency.
Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter made their home in apartment 7 of building 471 of a military housing complex in Rotterdam from October 1952 until October 1953. In the early 50s Jimmy Carter was a full lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, studying nuclear physics at nearby Union College.
At an unknown point in time, a plaque commemorating President and Mrs. Carter’s time living in Rotterdam was installed at the housing complex, now called Maple Pine Manor. Over the years, the monument fell into disrepair. Once this came to the attention of Assemblyman Santabarbara, he worked with a local masonry company, AJS Masonry Inc, to restore the monument.
