Statement from New York State Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara on the Renewal of Seneca Nation Compact Agreement
“As a long-standing member of the New York State Assembly's racing and wagering committee, I feel compelled to address the urgent need to renew the Seneca Nation compact agreement, which is set to expire later this year in New York State. While I strongly believe that having an agreement in place is essential, I am concerned about the potential ramifications of the tentative agreement that has been discussed. I fear that it could end up causing significant harm to our local communities, especially in terms of education funding.
The Seneca Nation compact agreement has played a crucial role in governing the operation of the Seneca casinos in our state. However, unlike other corporate entities like Rivers Casino here in Schenectady, which are bound by New York State rules and regulations, the Seneca casinos operate under a different framework. This disparity has raised some valid concerns about the impact on local communities and the state's education funding.
Education funding is vital for the well-being and future of our communities. Any agreement that results in an unacceptable loss in education funding is simply not in the best interest of our constituents. We must prioritize the needs of our students, teachers, and educational institutions.
As discussions continue regarding the renewal of the compact agreement, I urge all parties involved to carefully consider the consequences of their decisions. Our communities depend on the revenue generated by these casinos, and it is essential to strike a balance that ensures fair treatment and equitable support for all.
I am committed to working collaboratively with my colleagues in the Assembly and all stakeholders involved to find a solution that preserves education funding and benefits our local communities. It is vital to address the concerns raised by the current arrangement and seek a renewed agreement that promotes a more level playing field for all gaming establishments in New York State.
I will continue to keep a close eye on the negotiations and advocate for the best interests of our constituents. The people of New York deserve a fair and sustainable compact agreement that benefits both the Seneca Nation and the communities they operate in.
Together, we can ensure a prosperous future for New York State while upholding our commitment to quality education and vibrant local communities.”
