Santabarbara Pens Letter to U.S. Department of Transportation Following Amsterdam Train Derailment; Advocates for Comprehensive Nationwide Rail Safety Evaluation & Increased Funding
In the aftermath of the train derailment incident in Amsterdam, NY last Friday morning, Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara is urging the U.S. Department of Transportation, to initiate a prompt and comprehensive safety assessment of all federally regulated rail lines across the nation. Additionally, he underscores the need for substantial federal investments in rail infrastructure to fortify safety protocols and proactively avert future mishaps.
In the letter, Santabarbara emphasizes, "I am reaching out to implore immediate action from the U.S. Department of Transportation regarding the distressing and pervasive issue of train derailments, which has now reverberated within the boundaries of the Town of Amsterdam, NY—a vital segment of my constituency. Last week, a CSX train, bearing 17 cars including nine empty petroleum gas tanks and assorted mixed freight cars, experienced a derailment. Fortunately, no leaks were observed. Nonetheless, the potential ramifications were potentially catastrophic, inflicting severe disruptions upon both commercial and passenger rail services."
Santabarbara accentuates the nationwide nature of this challenge, citing a notable precedent earlier this year when a train derailment in East Palestine prompted evacuations and left an adverse ecological imprint. He issues a call for substantial federal investments be allocated to modernize the country's rail infrastructure, thereby improving safety, and preventing future accidents.
