Reflecting on National Crime Victims’ Rights Week in Schenectady, it was an honor to have participated in an event that highlighted the importance of supporting crime victims and advocating for their rights. The collaboration between Parents of Murdered Children & Other Survivors (POMC) and the YWCA of Northeastern NY brought our community together to remember victims and stand in solidarity with survivors.
Attending the ‘Hear Our Voices, Heal Our Hearts’ candlelight vigil at the YWCA NorthEastern NY was a poignant experience where individuals affected by violence came together to find solace and support. The setting provided a fitting backdrop for reflection and unity, with candles illuminating the evening atmosphere and fostering a sense of shared purpose.
Beyond just remembering, events like these are about healing and finding strength together. Witnessing the resilience and bravery of attendees reaffirmed the power of community in times of adversity. It serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to advocate for justice and support for victims, emphasizing the need for ongoing efforts to prevent further tragedies and ensure victims received the assistance they deserve.
I was proud to have sponsored a resolution in the New York State Assembly, reaffirming our commitment to supporting crime victims. As we gathered to honor those lost to violence and offered support to one another during times of grief, I took the opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all who showed their support for crime victims and their families.
Special thanks to Tina Mazzucco and Wendi Gapczynski for organizing this event. Let’s continue to work together to raise awareness, offer support, and advocate for the rights of crime victims in our community and beyond.
