Assemblyman Santabarbara Proposes Legislation to Provide Relief for Senior Citizens Facing Escalating Property Taxes
Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara announced today his co-sponsorship of Assembly Bill A6392, proposing a property tax cap for seniors. This legislation aims to alleviate financial strain on seniors by capping property taxes based on the amount paid at age sixty-five.
As senior citizens across New York struggle to make ends meet on fixed incomes, property taxes pose a significant threat to their financial security. This legislation aims to provide relief by implementing measures to freeze property taxes for eligible seniors, ensuring they can remain in their homes and age in place with dignity.
"Senior citizens have contributed immensely to our communities and deserve to age with dignity and financial security," said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. "By passing this legislation, we are taking a critical step towards providing meaningful relief for our seniors."
Under the proposed legislation, the amount of taxes paid by qualified seniors on their real property in subsequent years, including school taxes, would be capped at the amount paid in the year they turned sixty-five.
Assemblyman Santabarbara emphasized the importance of supporting seniors in the face of financial challenges. "Many seniors find themselves struggling to keep up with the financial burden of property taxes even with the current STAR Exemption. It is imperative that we take action to alleviate the financial strain on our senior citizens, whose fixed incomes often fail to keep pace with rising expenses such as insurance premiums, medical costs, and utilities."
