Restoring Vital Connections: Assemblyman Santabarbara's Advocacy for Upstate Rail Service
As a civil engineer by profession, infrastructure projects are not just a career but a personal passion. Recently, I had the privilege of playing a role in the successful restoration of full Amtrak service beyond Albany, extending into Saratoga and the North Country. This achievement stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts and perseverance required to enact positive change. In light of disruptions to rail service last year, including the partial suspension of Amtrak's Adirondack service due to disputes with Canadian National Railroad (CN), it was clear that continued advocacy remains essential.
This follows my efforts in communication with Amtrak's CEO, Stephen Gardner, emphasizing the importance of ensuring connectivity for residents and visitors alike. While the restoration of the Adirondack Service marks progress, there's still work to be done.
The significance of public transportation cannot be overstated, affecting the daily lives of countless New Yorkers. That's why I fought for important funding in this year's state budget for passenger rail, highlighting our commitment to creating a more accessible, efficient, and environmentally sustainable transportation network for all New Yorkers. I will continue this fight in the days, months and years to come.
Through my experiences, I've come to understand the importance of investing in transportation infrastructure. It's not merely about facilitating travel but also about driving economic growth, fostering connectivity, and promoting equity across our state.
As a father of a son with a disability, I've seen firsthand how important it is to ensure that transportation is accessible and supportive for all. Accommodating people with disabilities is crucial to ensuring access for everyone.
Moving forward, I remain committed to advocating for ensuring all Amtrak services in New York continue to serve our communities. During this legislative session, I will continue to collaborate with Amtrak and other stakeholders to find viable solutions that address the concerns of local businesses, travelers, and the overall economy of the Capital Region.
Once again, I extend my deepest gratitude to the Empire State Passengers Association for their collaboration and to each of you for your dedication to shaping a brighter future for New York. Thank you for your ongoing support and advocacy for a robust and reliable rail system that serves the needs of all New Yorkers.
