Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, Chair of the New York State Assembly’s Committee on Libraries and Education Technology, proudly announced today that the State Education Department (SED) has approved over $34 million in funding for library construction projects throughout New York State. This funding, secured in part through the efforts of Assemblyman Santabarbara in the 2023-24 state budget, will support 207 construction projects aimed at enhancing libraries and library systems statewide.

Among the recipients, the Mohawk Valley Library System will receive more than $560,000 to support the Amsterdam Free Library in building a new three-story addition, providing expanded resources and services to the community.

“Public libraries are essential pillars in our communities, offering free access to education, resources, and a place for community gathering,” said Assemblyman Santabarbara. “This funding will help ensure our libraries continue to be vibrant centers of learning, growth, and opportunity. As Chair of the Committee on Libraries and Education Technology, I’m proud to support projects that strengthen these vital institutions and make them more accessible to all.”

The expansion of the Amsterdam Free Library will include vast new meeting spaces, a multi-use community room, educational spaces, modern bathrooms, and an instructional kitchen. This is part of a multi-stage renovation project designed to modernize the library with exterior, HVAC, and accessibility upgrades.

Libraries across New York State serve as educational hubs and gathering spaces for residents of all ages, providing access to books, the internet, educational programs, and vital resources.
