Santabarbara Delivers Major Funding Win for SUNY Schenectady – State Budget Invests in Local Students, Jobs, and Access to Higher Education

Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara announced a major victory for SUNY Schenectady and community colleges statewide with new funding secured in the FY 2025–2026 New York State budget.

The budget includes an $8 million increase in operating aid for SUNY community colleges and fully maintains the 100% funding floor – preventing over $75 million in potential cuts. It also launches a new free community college initiative for adults aged 25–55 pursuing degrees in high-demand fields.

“This is a big win for SUNY Schenectady, for our students, and for working families,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “Community colleges are engines of opportunity – and this budget ensures they have the resources to keep delivering for Schenectady and beyond.”

The new investments support student success, faculty retention, workforce training, and affordability – priorities that have taken center stage as more New Yorkers turn to community colleges for career advancement and economic mobility.

Assemblyman Santabarbara added, “Whether it’s a first step toward a four-year degree or a path to a skilled trade, SUNY Schenectady opens doors. I fought to make sure that door stays open for every student – no matter their background, income, or age.”

“This funding will help us expand access and support student success at every level,” said Dr. Steady H. Moono, President of SUNY Schenectady. “Thanks to the advocacy of Assemblyman Santabarbara, our college can continue providing high-quality education and workforce training to more students – especially adult learners seeking new opportunities in high-demand fields. This investment strengthens our ability to serve as a gateway to higher education and economic mobility for the Capital Region.”

“This is a major win not just for SUNY Schenectady, but for our entire county,” said Gary Hughes, Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature. “Community colleges like SUNY Schenectady are essential to building a skilled workforce and a stronger local economy. Assemblyman Santabarbara’s leadership in securing this funding ensures that students of all ages can continue to learn, grow, and succeed right here in Schenectady.”

SUNY Schenectady is one of 30 SUNY community colleges benefitting from this year’s budget – a reflection of its vital role in higher education, workforce development, and local economic growth.
