Statement from Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara on Federal Changes to Special Education and Disability Rights

“I am deeply concerned by the federal decision to shift key special education and disability rights responsibilities out of the U.S. Department of Education.

As Chair of the New York State Assembly Committee on People with Disabilities and the father of a son with autism, I know both personally and through my work in public service how important strong educational protections and support systems are for individuals with disabilities and their families.

I share the concerns raised by the Autism Society and other disability advocacy organizations about the potential impact these changes could have on students with disabilities and the protections guaranteed under federal law.

For 50 years, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) has helped ensure that students with disabilities have access to the educational opportunities and services they need to succeed. As these changes move forward, we must protect those rights and preserve the progress that has been made for individuals with disabilities and their families.

As always, I will continue to stand with the disability community and support efforts that protect the rights, opportunities, and dignity of every individual with a disability.”
