As part of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, April 19-25, Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara (D-Rotterdam) is encouraging residents to come together and support crime victims and their families.

“Unfortunately, we hear countless stories regarding violent crimes in our communities,” stated Assemblyman Santabarbara. “These victims could be our neighbors, friends or loved ones whose lives have been turned upside down and their families are left struggling to pick up the pieces. If you know someone who has experienced a tragedy, reach out. It really goes a long way to show compassion and help build a strong community.”

In honor of this week, Assemblyman Santabarbara also helped pass a package of bills that would give crime victims and their families the support they need during this most difficult time. The package of bills includes measures that provide individuals with counseling expenses as well as allow victims to receive compensations for transportation and costs associated with necessary court appearances (A.3694, A.1097). Additionally, he supported bills that would:

• extend orders of protection issued in relation to felony or misdemeanor sexual assault cases to ensure victims are protected while their abusers are on probation (A.1797-A);
• protect the rights of victims and families by ensuring their voices are heard if and when their perpetrator is being considered for parole (A.6945); and
• safeguard the rights of tenants to report criminal acts, including acts of domestic violence, without the fear of losing their homes as a result of landlord actions or local nuisance laws (A.1322).

“Today’s measures aim to protect and help victims and their families regain normalcy and rebuild their lives,” concluded Assemblyman Santabarbara.
