Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara’s Student Cabinet will hold their second meeting on Tuesday (June 2) at the state Capitol and conduct a hearing on teacher evaluations.

Education advocates will testify and answer questions from students about creating teacher evaluation systems. After the hearing, students will work in groups to draft teacher evaluation systems and present their proposals to Assemblyman Santabarbara.

“Students have a lot to say about the decisions affecting them and their future. I formed the Student Cabinet to give a voice to our community’s youth and our first meeting produced lively debates and discussions about how we fund our local schools,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara. “Our upcoming meeting will give students a chance to weigh in on how we evaluate our teachers, which directly impacts their learning environment.”

The Student Cabinet was assembled by Santabarbara to give students from the 111th Assembly District a voice in the critical issues affecting their education, including school funding, Common Core and testing. In their first meeting, students worked in groups to draft school budgets and then allocated state education aid based on those proposals.

WHO: The Student Cabinet includes high school students from Schenectady and Montgomery counties. Testifying in the hearing will be education professionals from the Alliance for Quality Education, New York State Council of School Superintendents and New York State United Teachers.
