Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara (D-Rotterdam) is calling on the governor to approve a package of bills that will help local brewers and distilleries grow their businesses.

The state Legislature has passed legislation that makes it easier for local companies to promote their products and reduces administrative filing requirements.

“Demand for locally produced beer and spirits is at an all-time high and we are making it easier for craft beverage providers to get their products into the hands of customers. This common-sense package of legislation will cut red tape and spread awareness of local products,” said Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara.

Under existing law, liquor and grocery stores need to a have a producer on-site to provide a tasting of their products. This new legislation will allow the stores to offer their own tastings, which will increase opportunities for customers to discover and purchase local products (A. 8043). For instance, a customer interested in sampling a new beer at a growler station would be able to try the product before making their purchase.

“Customers appreciate the opportunity to sample product prior to making a purchase. And retailers, on behalf of themselves and manufacturers, would like to be able to answer that call - particularly when offering unique, store-made and locally handcrafted products,” said Mona Golub, Vice President of Public Relations & Consumer Services for Price Chopper Supermarkets/Market 32.

These bills would also eliminate burdensome annual filing notice for small brewers and wineries, allowing them to focus their efforts on manufacturing and distribution (S. 4668 & A. 7106).

“Eliminating burdensome regulations is a step in the right direction for local craft brewers. This legislation will give us more time to focus on growing our business and making our beer,” said Jeff McDonald spokesman for the McDonald family, owners and operators of The Van Dyck.
