Assemblyman Anil Beephan (R,C-East Fishkill) is celebrating the recently enacted law that dedicates a bridge in Dutchess County to Zone Sgt. James Sweeney, a former NYPD and State Police officer who called the Hudson Valley home. Gov. Hochul signed the bill into law recently, in memory of Sgt. Sweeney’s service and sacrifice to the people of New York. During his time as an officer, Sweeney also bravely served the people of New York at ground zero and recently passed away in 2021 due to the lingering effects of environmental exposure from that day. Beephan is honored to have been part of recognizing this local hero.

“I am deeply honored to share that Governor Hochul has signed our bill paying tribute to the indomitable spirit of Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney,” Beephan said. “His sacrifice at Ground Zero, which eventually claimed his life, is a testament to his unwavering dedication. Today, twenty-two years after that tragic day, we proudly unveil the ‘Zone Sergeant James G. Sweeney Memorial Bridge’ in East Fishkill. This isn’t just a bill; it's a symbol of resilience and remembrance, echoing the stories of thousands of victims. My heartfelt gratitude to Senator Rolison, Governor Hochul, and all who supported this endeavor.”

The bill was carried in the state Senate by fellow Hudson Valley representative Sen. Rob Rolison who was just as happy to see it signed into law.

“Zone Sergeant Sweeney’s life was ordered and defined by service to his community and his state,” Rolison said. “As a former Town of Poughkeepsie police officer who knew Sergeant Sweeney, I am honored to carry this bicameral legislation along with my colleague and friend Assemblyman Beephan designating an East Fishkill bridge and stretch of state highway in his memory. We must continue to support and honor those who sacrifice to protect us.”
