Beephan, Rolison Unveil Roads Renamed in Honor of Native American Chief, Local Veteran
Assemblyman Anil Beephan, Jr. (R, C - East Fishkill) was joined by Sen. Rob Rolison (R-39th District), Fishkill Supervisor Ozzy Albra, Highway Superintendent Carmine Istvan, members of the Fishkill Town Board and representatives from the New York State Department of Transportation to commemorate the renaming of two roads in honor of local Dutchess County heroes Chief Daniel Nimham and Cpl. Derick Franklin Brinckerhoff.
Daniel Nimham was the chief of the native Wappinger people who lived in the Dutchess County area. He joined the American Revolution against British forces before ultimately dying in action. Cpl. Brinckerhoff was a Fishkill resident who enlisted in the Marines and was deployed to Korea in 1950. He was killed in action at the Battle of Pusan and posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
"It is an honor to join my colleagues for this significant occasion," Beephan remarked. "Dutchess County is blessed with a rich history and is home to many noteworthy individuals who have served our nation. Recognizing heroes like Nimham and Brinckerhoff is vital, as their sacrifices are the cornerstone of our freedom today. May these road dedications symbolize all those who made the ultimate sacrifice in serving our nation. Thank you to Senator Rolison and to the Governor for their partnership in this legislation."
"I am proud to honor the impressive legacies of these courageous individuals with today's successful dedications," Rolison said. "My colleague Assemblyman Beephan and I were committed to delivering this legislation for the residents of Fishkill and all those in the Hudson Valley who continue to honor the compelling pathways of our shared history as guideposts to a more perfect union. Chief Nimham and Corporal Brinckerhoff were veterans, patriotic Americans, and local heroes. These signs will serve as lasting public tributes to their sacrifice on behalf of a grateful state and nation."
"We are honored to commemorate the lives and legacies of individuals who exemplified service above self through these road renamings," supervisor Albra said. "Chief Daniel Nimham, the last sachem of the Wappinger people and a veteran of the American Revolutionary War, remains a revered figure in the Hudson Valley region for his profound dedication to his country. Today, we also remember and honor Corporal Derick Franklin Brinckerhoff, a resident of Fishkill who bravely served in the Marine Corps and made the ultimate sacrifice during the Korean War's battle of Pusan in 1950. Corporal Brinckerhoff's bravery and sacrifice exemplify the highest ideals of service and sacrifice. Their memories will continue to inspire and remind us of the courage and commitment of those who have served our nation."
"The roads we travel hold significant meaning and renaming them to honor these local heroes profoundly impacts the legacy our community leaves behind. Now, Chief Daniel Nimham and Corporal Derick Franklin Brinckerhoff will always be remembered here," Beephan concluded.
