Hochul’s Hapless Housing Hoax Halts
Over the last week, the Democrat-run Legislature snuffed out Gov. Hochul’s proposed Housing Compact.
As the Ranking Minority Member of the Local Governments Committee, Assemblyman Ari Brown (R-Cedarhurst) applauds the Albany Minority lawmakers for aggressively fighting Gov. Hochul’s Housing Compact Plan, which she included in this year's state budget. Gov. Hochul was pushing for a fast-track process that would overrule local zoning codes and force 800,000 housing units into New York’s suburban neighborhoods. Legislators had concerns about overburdening limited infrastructure, schools, police and hospitals with the potential avalanche of new residents in the suburbs.
“Housing is a fundamental aspect of the American Dream. Minority lawmakers believe every American should have access to safe, affordable housing that provides stability, security and a foundation for building a better life. We recognize the importance of good housing policy in promoting economic growth, creating jobs and fostering strong, resilient communities.
“Unfortunately, many of the housing policies proposed by the Assembly Majority are misguided and counterproductive. Gov. Hochul's housing plan is a prime example of this. The plan relies heavily on government intervention and mandates, which we Minority lawmakers believe will ultimately lead to higher costs, fewer options and reduced quality of life for ordinary New Yorkers.
“The failure of Gov. Hochul's housing plan is a victory for common sense and individual freedom. We must continue to promote policies that empower individuals and the private sector to create vibrant, thriving communities where everyone has the opportunity to achieve the American Dream,” said Brown.
