Manktelow Pushes for Funding for Empire State American Legion Boys State Program

Assemblyman Brian Manktelow (R,C,I,Ref-Lyons) and his colleagues with the Assembly have sent a letter to the governor and other legislative leaders urging them to continue to fund the Empire State American Legion Boys State program in this year’s budget. Traditionally, $150,000 is allocated for the week-long program held at SUNY Morrisville which gives high school seniors first-class citizenship and leadership training. This week, the American Legion is celebrating its 100th anniversary, having been founded in Paris on March 15, 1919.
“We are not doing enough to help prepare young adults for life after high school,” said Manktelow. “Kids these days graduate from high school without knowing basic life skills or even what career opportunities are out there. The Empire State American Legion Boys State program provides enthusiastic high school seniors with important leadership skills, teamwork building exercises and the opportunity to learn from some of the most respected members of our society. This program is an especially wonderful opportunity for young adults who are interested in joining the military by offering them the chance to interact with active duty Marines and counselors from the American Legion. I will continue to push for this until our voices are heard and funding is provided.”
