Assemblyman Brian Manktelow reminds residents that his Summer Reading Challenge, designed to encourage a love of reading and books by school-age children, will run during July and August. This year’s theme is “A Universe of Stories,” and encourages young readers to explore tales of science and space, as well as learn about the world around them with activities related to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).

“I am pleased to present this summer reading opportunity to students and parents alike,” Assemblyman Manktelow said. “It is great when children spend time reading, and parents read with them. We don’t want learning to stop just because school is out. The reading challenge helps to keep reading a priority and helps their success in the classroom when school resumes.”

If children do not receive an official reading calendar through their schools or at their local library, they may contact Assemblyman Manktelow’s office. Parents, grandparents, babysitters or others with whom the child reads mark each day in July and August that a child spends on reading. When 40 days have been marked, the child is eligible to receive a New York State Assembly “Excellence in Reading” certificate from Assemblyman Manktelow. The certificate recognizes each child for attaining the goal.

“Many libraries throughout the state also participate in the challenge,” the Assemblyman said. “Libraries provide excellent places for children to read and they also learn to utilize library resources.”
