Assemblywoman Woerner Announces Bill to Rename Section of Route 9 in Honor of Submarine Veterans Passes Assembly
The measure would rename the route “United States Submarine Veterans’ Memorial Highway-Saratoga County”
Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner (D-Round Lake) announced that a measure she authored to rename a portion of Route 9 as the “United States Submarine Veterans’ Memorial Highway-Saratoga County” has passed the Assembly (A.8657-C). This legislation has also passed the state Senate and now awaits the governor’s signature.
“By renaming the highway, we are highlighting the rich military and naval history of New York State, especially here in Saratoga County,” said Woerner. “This highway will also serve as recognition to the submarine service, which has long played an integral role in our nation’s security.”
Saratoga County is a natural fit for the memorial highway as the Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit in West Milton, Knolls Atomic Power Labs in Schenectady, the Scotia and Saratoga Naval Support Units and submarine veterans’ groups are all nearby. Over the years, nearly 60,000 have completed the Navy’s local nuclear power training program, including former President Jimmy Carter.
“New York State, the Capital District, and Saratoga County are proud to be home to the United States Submarine Veterans Association. Sailors and officers made vital contributions to war efforts from WWII through the Cold War and thousands paid the ultimate sacrifice; we honor them by marking Route 9 in Saratoga County as the ‘United States Submarine Veterans’ Memorial Highway,’” said Fred Miller, project manager of the Albany-Saratoga Base of U.S. Submarine Veterans, Inc. “Thanks go to our legislative delegation led by Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner and Senator Kathy Marchione.”
The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors has also passed a resolution in support of the proposed name change.1
