Assembly Members Charles D. Fall and Mike Reilly on the Two-Year Moratorium Extension Amidst the 50th Anniversary of the Liquefied Natural Gas Tank Explosion
"50 years ago, one of the deadliest industrial explosions occurred on Staten Island killing 40 workers. The 600,000-barrel tank in Bloomfield was being treated for repairs when fire broke out having natural gas trapped inside the tank leading to the explosion. Due to this incident, the plans to construct two massive liquefied natural tanks in Rossville were halted. Today, I was proud to have the Assembly pass Bill A6569; which will extend the moratorium on the issuance of environmental safety certificates for facilities and routes for the transportation of liquefied natural or petroleum gas for two more years," said Assemblyman Charles D. Fall (D-Richmond, New York, Kings).
"There are likely few who remember the tragic disaster that occurred 50 years ago on the West Shore, when a natural gas tank explosion took the lives of 40 workers. It remains to be Staten Island's worst industrial accident ever; I want to thank Assemblyman Fall for his partnership, making this a priority, and getting it through our Chamber so that our community never has to experience a similar tragedy ever again. This legislation will ensure that the liquid natural gas tanks in Rossville remain decommissioned," said Assemblyman Reilly (R-Richmond).
