Assemblymember Lavine Recognizes Environmental Good Samaritan
Glen Cove, New York – Assemblymember Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove) presented a citation to Glen Cove resident Joe Douso, for his efforts to protect the local environment.Douso alerted authorities to a broken pipe that was allowing raw sewage to mix with water that goes from the center of the city of Glen Cove to Long Island Sound via a rain water drainage tunnel.Sometime after a severe rain storm in September, Mr. Douso noticed an odor emanating from the water flowing under Glen Cove Ave. adjacent the Glen Cove Fire Department. He was able to track down a broken pipe he suspects was caused by the massive amount of rain water flowing from that storm which flooded many parts of the city.Mr. Douso’s discovery resolved an issue that Hempstead Harbor environmental advocates had been trying to resolve for a number of weeks.Douso says the pipe has since been repaired and the area has shown improvement in terms of its look and smell.
“I believe protecting the environment is a top priority and am so proud of the efforts of Mr. Douso to be proactive and take action to address this issue,” said Lavine.
