Hauppauge, NY – March 30, 2020: Long Island Cares, Inc. - The Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank continues to implement a number of actions and safety measures to assist the community during the coronavirus pandemic. New York State Assemblyman Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove) has announced that Long Island Cares will open a temporary emergency food distribution center at 68 School Street in downtown Glen Cove beginning April 1st to provide emergency food boxes and other supplies to families in Glen Cove that are in need.

"Long Island Cares is once again coming to the need of others by setting up a food distribution site in Glen Cove,” said Assemblyman Lavine. “My office was able to help identify and secure an ADA accessible storefront to be used as the food distribution site in the heart of Downtown Glen Cove. I want to thank the generous donation made by the property owner of 68 School Street for making this possible. In these difficult and stressful times, Long Island Cares is casting hope on our community. I want to thank Paule Pachter, the CEO of Long Island Cares for addressing the needs of food insecurity to the community as a whole and for the hard work his team is committed to during this pandemic."

According to Pachter, “Our staff has been monitoring the increase in telephone calls, emails, and social media messages coming into our helpline and we’ve seen a high volume of requests for assistance from residents in the City of Glen Cove. We reached out to Assemblyman Lavine’s office to offer our assistance and he was able to identify a local property owner willing to donate the corner storefront location immediately to help the Glen Cove community.”

The Long Island Cares Glen Cove Covid-19 Distribution Location will be open two days a week, Wednesdays from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM and Fridays from 3:00 – 7:00 PM. Glen Cove residents are invited to visit the location to pick-up emergency food boxes, and no appointments are required. Staff and volunteers will employ physical distancing practices, and visitors are requested to do the same. “This temporary distribution location will remain open until Governor Cuomo announces reductions in physical distancing as a result of flattening the curve of Covid-19 so that residents can receive emergency food in their local community,” said Dr. Jessica Rosati, Chief Program Officer for Long Island Cares, Inc.

In addition to the temporary distribution center in Glen Cove, Long Island Cares operates six additional permanent emergency food distribution sites throughout Long Island to help the 259,000 Long Islanders experiencing food insecurity and hunger.
