Assemblymember Lavine Outraged by Nazi Symbol Vandalism, Stresses Importance of Jewish Education
Glen Cove, NY – As Genocide Awareness Month comes to a close, and yet another act of senseless hate is perpetrated against Jews in our area, Assemblymember Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove) is urging better education about the tragedies befallen upon the Jewish people in recent history. Lavine has sponsored the Hate Education bill A5880 which makes learning about the noose and swastika compulsory. He is also a proud backer of the Holocaust Education bill A00472 which would ensure students are taught about the Holocaust. Lavine, whose entire European family was murdered by the Nazis, was outraged by the recent painting of a Swastika on the outside of a Port Washington elementary school. Lavine says, “We must never cease in our efforts to attack hatred through education.” Lavine’s bill specifically requires instruction regarding symbols of hate, including the swastika and the noose, to be incorporated into the curricula for grades six through twelve. It is now pending in the Assembly.
