Tague to Co-Sponsor ‘First Responder’ Protection Act
Legislation would provide benefit and incentives to first responders.
Assemblyman Chris Tague (R,C,I,Ref-Schoharie) has co-sponsored the Volunteer Firefighter and Ambulance Worker Protection and Incentive Act of 2018 (A6055A). This bill would provide earned benefits for our firefighters, ambulance workers and EMS workers.
“Volunteer first responders have some of the most stressful and important jobs in our society,” Tague said. “In rural areas it can be particularly challenging to recruit and retain emergency service workers. Having been a volunteer firefighter myself I know just how hard it can be for these brave folks. This bill would require the state to help our localities solve this problem.”
The Volunteer Firefighter and Ambulance Worker Protection and Incentive Act of 2018 would provide numerous, well-deserved benefits to our first responders. The bill would provide a $500 tax credit for all volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers. Another provision would protect volunteers from losing their jobs if they are responding to an emergency. It would also exempt volunteer ambulance services from highway tolls.
“These benefits will help ensure that first responders are appreciated for all they do. When you answer the call at 3 a.m. to charge into a burning building or rush to the aid of someone having a heart attack, what we owe you is beyond words. I’m dedicated to trying to repay that debt in any way we possibly can.”
