Assemblyman Chris Tague (R,C,I-Schoharie) today joined the New York State Assembly in passing two resolutions to proclaim March 6 as World Lymphedema Day in New York.

The resolutions also honored Linda Batwin O’Donovan of Saugerties, who has been an advocate for those with the condition as a member of the Lymphatic Education and Research Network and lives with it herself. Linda has worked to raise awareness of the condition, and to raise money to benefit organizations that research the condition and assist those who have Lymphedema.

Lymphedema is a condition that occurs when the body’s natural lymphatic drainage system is damaged, blocked or does not develop properly and the lymphatic fluid within a given area is unable to drain properly. This condition results in extreme swelling that impairs mobility, function and can cause pain and significantly impair an affected person’s quality of life.

“Lymphedema is something we should all know and talk about, as hundreds of thousands of Americans live with it every day of their lives,” said Tague. “I am so grateful to Linda and the people of the Lymphatic Education and Research Network for the work they do assuring the lives and concerns of those living with lymphedema are heard in the public sphere, and for all she’s done to help our neighbors with lymphedema live happily and comfortably in our community.”
