Celebrating Western New York: Our Women of Distinction
A column from the desk of Assemblyman David DiPietro (R,C-East Aurora)
As the holiday season approaches, it lends us an opportunity to pause and reflect on gratitude and the quiet acts of kindness that bring families and communities together. I am filled with pride recalling my inaugural Women of Distinction event held earlier this month. In a world often dominated by Albany's headlines and partisan battles, this gathering reminded us all that the future of Western New York lies not in political debates, but in the selfless women who quietly uplift our families, neighborhoods and veterans every day.
As your representative, it is my responsibility to represent our values in Albany, but this first annual ceremony was a chance to showcase and remind ourselves what those values are. I was proud to highlight those who go above and beyond. The 147th District is home to numerous women who give selflessly, lead boldly, lift others up and make lasting impacts through public service, volunteerism, education, advocacy and community leadership. As I welcomed guests, I shared that we were there to honor remarkable women who strengthen our communities and embody the very best of Western New York. Each of their stories was unique and personified their resilience and dedication. I personally was moved by the remarkable examples of selflessness that I was privileged to recognize that day.
We celebrated 10 extraordinary honorees, each a testament to what makes our region special:
Lindsay Lorigo, our principled Erie County Legislator, champions fiscal responsibility and transparency while coaching youth sports.
Marie Rock, a lifelong East Aurora resident and health advocate, teaches vibrant living and fights for personal freedoms.
Robin Sion, a dedicated election official and leader, serves with integrity in our democratic process.
Karen Matyjakowski, a proud Air Force veteran and the first woman commander of her AmVets post, leads efforts to honor fallen heroes.
Holly Baker, a Gold Star Mother who lost her son in Iraq, devotes hundreds of volunteer hours annually to veterans and military families.
Anne Horan, a creative leader in media and events, builds meaningful community connections.
Emily Herman, a school superintendent, is guiding rural education through innovation and empathy.
Brigid Maloney, an accomplished health law attorney and town counsel, mentors youth and serves numerous boards.
Linda Blazier, a nurse practitioner running a holistic practice, promotes freedom-friendly wellness.
Chrissy Casilio, a communications expert and community advocate, holds government accountable while mentoring the next generation.
From veterans and educators to business owners and public servants, these women represent what makes Western New York great. I'm excited to make this an annual tradition and invite nominations for next year. I look forward to celebrating the women whose work strengthens Western New York.
