Assemblyman David G. McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) voted in favor of legislation that would provide an additional $200 million in supplemental state funding to the federal Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). The legislation passed the Assembly on Tuesday and awaits state Senate approval before it can be sent on to the governor for his consideration.

“New York’s HEAP provides financial assistance for individuals, families and seniors during times of economic hardship and soaring energy costs, like the ones all of us experienced in the wake of Hurricane Katrina,” said McDonough.

HEAP is a federally funded program administered by each state to benefit its low-income residents and other needy individuals. Benefit amounts are based on gross monthly household income, residents’ ages and household size. Homeowners with children under the age of 6 and adults who are over 60 are considered vulnerable populations and may receive higher benefits.
