Assemblyman McDonough Welcomes Brandon Silveria To Division Avenue High School

Assemblyman David G. McDonough (R,C-Merrick) and the Century Council partnered this week to bring a life-saving lesson about the dangers of drunk driving and underage drinking to the students of Division Avenue High School. Brandon Silveria and his father Tony spoke to the students at Division Avenue High School about the importance of “making the right choice” about alcohol—and for students who are under the age of 21, the only responsible decision is not to drink.

Brandon is a young man who was involved in an alcohol-related crash at the age of 17 and was left in a coma for three months and spent several years in rehabilitation. Brandon was so badly injured that his basic motor functions such as walking, talking and swallowing had to be re-learned. Brandon’s presentation received a rousing ovation from the students of Division Avenue High School.

“Brandon’s presentation was extremely moving and he speaks to young people to raise awareness about the serious problem of underage drinking, and by doing so, urges them to “make the right choice” and possibly save their own lives or the life of a friend. That is why I felt it was so important to bring this program to the students of Division Avenue High School,” said Assemblyman David G. McDonough.

The Century Council is a national, not-for-profit organization dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking. Founded in 1991, the Council is funded by distillers.
