A Statement From Assemblyman David G. McDonough On Governor Spitzer Rescinding His Plan To Issue Driver’s Licenses To Illegal Aliens
“It took a recent Siena poll showing the governor’s approval rating at an all time low and that 70 percent of all New Yorkers are against issuing driver’s licenses to illegal aliens, for Governor Spitzer to rescind his reckless plan. From the moment it was announced, New Yorkers from all walks of life and all political affiliations rallied from Long Island to Buffalo against it being implemented. My office and staff were inundated with phone calls and e-mails from citizens voicing their displeasure, asking what could be done to stop it. The effort put forth to get the voice of New York heard was a true representation of the democratic process at work. When all other reasonable efforts to halt implementation of this plan failed, I joined with my Assembly Minority colleagues on a lawsuit that would have attempted to halt it in the state courts. This plan was clearly against New York state law, unsafe for all New Yorkers and Americans, and bypassed the legislative process.”
