McDonough: Budget Works For Families, Schools, Economy
Legislative Statement by Assemblyman Dave McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick)
The 2012-13 state budget continues to build upon last year’s successes as we move forward with our economic recovery. This budget certainly signaled compromise and progress in several areas once again, including the first early budget since 1983. I was proud to support a state budget that restores a significant amount of aid back to our schools, continues to trim overall spending and promotes economic and job development for Long Island. While we have more work to do to get our state back on track, my colleagues and I have begun to rebuild a stronger foundation for our students, families and community.
Lawmakers must address unfunded state mandates and Medicaid, both of which currently cripple municipalities and school districts. The toxic Medicaid program consumes over one-third of the total state budget every year. Prohibiting unfunded state mandates imposing a cost on localities and schools are issues I have consistently advocated and will continue to support.
