McDonough Takes Part In PARP Olympics At Norman J. Levy Lakeside School
Shares story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s march for social justice
Assemblyman Dave McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) today visited Levy Lakeside School’s Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) Olympics Reading program. As part of the program, McDonough read “As Good As Anybody,” by Richard Michelson, to Ms. Ruth Rosenberg's fifth grade students. “As Good As Anybody” is the story of Martin Luther King Jr. and Abraham Joshua Heschel’s efforts for social justice, the remarkable friendship they formed and how their personal experiences of discrimination sparked a message of love and equality for all. The students also asked McDonough about New York State government and his role as an assemblyman.
“With the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday, I felt this was a fitting opportunity to reinforce the message of social justice and importance of treating each other as equals, preached by Dr. King,” said McDonough. “The PARP Olympics are a great way to encourage students to experience the joys of reading and learn about the world around them. I want to thank Levy Lakeside Elementary for inviting me to take part in this program, and I hope the students enjoyed and learned from today’s story.”
