McDonough Offers Important Information As Residents Prepare Their New York State Taxes
The deadline to file taxes with New York State is April 15, 2014
Assemblyman Dave McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) is reminding residents of important information as they prepare to file their New York State taxes. Many useful resources are available for residents through state government. In addition, new regulations have been put in place to protect consumers who hire tax preparers. The new regulations include the creation of a New York State Fraud Analysis and Selection Team (FAST), which detects large-scale tax preparer schemes.
“Tax season is upon us again and, unfortunately, con men and others often prey upon unwitting residents,” said McDonough. “Fortunately, the Department of Taxation and Finance offers residents a bevy of resources to help prevent exploitation by tax preparers. I strongly encourage anyone who is considering hiring a tax preparer to review the rules and regulations and ensure their preparer meets New York State standards.”
Since 2011, the majority of tax preparers have been required to register annually with the Tax Department. Building on that registration, for the first time in New York State, most individuals who are paid to prepare at least 10 New York State tax returns in a year will be required to:
- Pass a state competency examination;
- Be at least 18 and a high school graduate, or possess the equivalent of a high school degree;
- Meet applicable IRS requirements;
- Take four hours of annual continuing education; and
- Beginning tax return preparers (with fewer than three years of experience preparing New York State tax returns) must take a 16-hour basic tax course.
