Assemblyman Dave McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) today came out in full opposition to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposed plan to dump dredged material from nearby states’ rivers, lakes and waterways into sites in Long Island Sound. McDonough, along with over a dozen federal, state and local representatives, signed a letter to President Obama saying they would sue the federal government if the plan to pollute the sound was executed.

“Long Island Sound is one of the most beautiful areas in our entire state and we cannot afford to take actions which will jeopardize its sanctity in any way,” McDonough said. “Tens of thousands of visitors use these parks each year, along with the diverse wildlife that inhabits these waters, and we have an obligation to protect their interests. Long Island is not the dumping ground for other states, and my hope is that the EPA forgoes this ill-conceived plan and chooses a more environmentally-sound plan for disposing of this dredged material. I stand behind Gov. Cuomo’s plan to sue the federal government if it attempts to pollute Long Island’s waters.”
