As Budget Bills Appear, McDonough Demands Permanent Tax Cap Be Solidified
March 29, Albany With budget bills hanging in the balance two days before the April 1 deadline, Assemblyman Dave McDonough (R,C,I-Merrick) is committed to staying in Albany until legislators pass and Gov. Cuomo signs the critical permanent 2 percent property tax cap into law.
We cannot allow the permanent tax cap to linger any longer. Governor Cuomo promised he wouldnt sign a budget without the permanent tax cap, my constituents want to see it to believe it. Now is the time to deliver on this promise, McDonough said.
The rising price-tag of mandated spending being passed onto local governments by the state, especially Medicaid spending, is leaving localities scrambling to find funds for their skyrocketing budgets. Nassau County and New Yorkers are watching fees soar on everything from real estate to trash pickup as a way to ostensibly override the 2 percent cap because they cannot keep up with the costs coming from Albany.
Originating from the Assembly Minority Conference, the permanent tax cap has delivered millions of dollars in savings for Long Island residents and New Yorkers throughout our state, McDonough added. Year after year as cost of living increases and incomes remain stagnant, taxes become a bigger proportion of my constituents incomes, especially seniors. As a result of these policies, the mass exodus of New Yorkers out of our state continues. Therefore, I will be a leading voice to deliver desperately-needed tax relief for our middle class until it is realized.
