Albany, NY – Binghamton University Professor Dr. Anne Bailey was honored as part of the NYS Legislative Women’s Caucus “Women’s History Month” celebration. This year’s theme was “Women who Advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.” Dr. Bailey joined Assemblywoman Lupardo at a luncheon last Wednesday at the Executive Mansion where she was also recognized by Governor Hochul. 

Each member of the Women’s Caucus chose a woman leader from their community who is a strong advocate for eliminating bias and discrimination. Assemblywoman Lupardo chose Dr. Bailey for the recognition. A display has been up in the Legislative Office Building during the month of March, featuring all of the honorees, along with a one-word description of each.

Dr. Bailey holds a PhD and MA from the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA from Harvard University. She is a writer, historian, and a Professor of History at Binghamton University. She is also the Director of the Harriet Tubman Center for Freedom and Equity, the University’s hub for research-driven solutions for contemporary problems regarding race and civil rights. In this role, Bailey has led the efforts to establish a Freedom Trail in Downtown Binghamton. The project showcases key locations on the Underground Railroad and other notable abolitionist sites, as well as partners with local school districts to integrate curricula that includes diverse perspectives and celebrates New York’s heritage of liberty and civil rights.

Bailey is committed to sharing her work with the public at various events. Of note, in 2015 she was invited to speak at the United Nations on the occasion of the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. She shared her research, writing and other professional experiences with NGOs that are affiliated with the United Nations. In so doing, she was able to honor the lives and contributions of enslaved black Americans and others in the African Diaspora.

This trail will ensure that Binghamton’s place in civil rights history is not overlooked. Anne’s dedication and passion is certainly inspiring to all who know her.”
