Broome County Office for Aging Updates Senior Centers With $50K Grant Secured by Assemblywoman Lupardo
Broome West gets new appliances, exercise equipment and funds for programming
(BROOME COUNTY, NY) – Broome County Office for Aging unveiled upgrades at Broome West Senior Center completed as part of a $50,000 NYS Assembly grant secured by Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo. The upgrades were announced during National Senior Citizens Day, celebrated with a special lunch at each County Senior Center.
The grant funded upgrades to four area Senior Centers, with the majority going to Broome West who had the greatest need. Broome West was able to purchase new appliances including a refrigerator, freezer, stove, steam table, and stackable washer and dryer, along with new exercise equipment (treadmill, elliptical machine, exercise bands and free weights). In addition, the grant helped pay for laptops, educational classes, and respite programming for center participants. Upgrades at the other Centers included new appliances and equipment, and funds for classes and programming.
Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo said, “Every time I visit a Broome County OFA Senior Center, I’m reminded how fortunate we are to have these centers in our community. It’s always a pleasure to direct grants to the OFA because I know how well the funds will be spent and how important these upgrades are for the centers.”
Broome County Executive Jason Garnar said, “Our senior centers provide not only meals and activities but also connection and support for older adults in our community. Thanks to Assemblywoman Lupardo’s leadership and advocacy, we’ve been able to make important upgrades that will improve the quality of life for our seniors and ensure these centers remain modern, vibrant gathering places for years to come.”
Mary Turbush, Director, Broome County Office for the Aging said, “Thank you to Assemblywoman Lupardo for securing a grant to help Office for Aging modernize appliances, upgrade equipment and bring new opportunities to older adults visiting the centers. Office for Aging takes pride in offering social connections, wellness activities, hot lunches and educational opportunities. Assemblywoman Lupardo is no stranger to our centers, and we appreciate her willingness to help us to provide a safe and welcoming environment for those we serve.”
